Strategic plan

The strategic plan for this paper would be the implementation of the nursing bedside report. It is worth noting that a nursing bedside report is a crucial tool that is fundamental to providing the guide for engaging both the patients and the family members regarding the treatment process. During the nursing bedside reporting, patients are acknowledged about their general progress and their response to the treatment (McMurray, 2013). Therefore, it is helpful in boosting the satisfaction of the patient concerning the overall treatment process. Apart from engaging the patients and family on regards to the treatment process, nursing bedside report is also beneficial to the hospital by assisting in the promotion of the quality and safety during the treatment process (Copeland, 2012). Besides, bedside reporting is also helpful because it assist in the overall team building among the nurses. Since nursing bedside reporting is one of the important roles of nursing practice, this paper would focus on how it can be implemented effectively to ensure that its underlined benefits are realized in the hospital set up especially for the inpatients section (Alvin, 2010).

Background information on the nursing bedside report

The primary aim of undertaking the process of the bedside reporting is to ensure that there is a safe handoff between nurses as well as getting both the patients and the members of the family involved during the treatment process. It is important to note that the patient is tasked with identifying the family member that should take part in the course of the nursing bedside reporting. Additionally, the hospitals usually perform the training of new nurses on how to conduct the bedside reporting process successfully. Before changing shift, each of the nurses invites both the patient and the family member besides the patients’ bed where the process of the nurse bedside reporting takes place. In the event that it is the first reporting session, the nurse should explain to both the patient and the family member what the bedside reporting is together with what they expect from the bedside reporting session. Either this should be done verbally or written brochure if available; however, it is believed that verbal explanation is a better option because it allows for clarifications on areas that are not apparent to the patient or the family member (Copeland, 2012).

The resources that are needed for successful implementation of the nursing bedside reporting include the staffing team as well as the communication materials. The staffing team involves multidisciplinary individuals that are tasked with training, identification of the bedside reporting needs, and the implementation of the bedside reporting strategies. The members of the staffing team include nurse managers and the registered nurse champion. The staffing team is the primary implementers of the nursing bedside reporting by undertaking the training of the new nurses as well as the actual reporting session (McMurray, 2013). Alongside staffing team, another resource that is vital for the implementation of the communication materials. The main communication material that is used for the nursing bedside reporting is the printed brochures, which are given to both the patient and the family members at the time of bedside reporting. The brochure contains the summary of the performance and the response of the patient to the treatment (Alvin, 2010).

SWOT analysis of the nursing bedside report

Strengths Weaknesses
It has increased accountability among the nurses It increases satisfaction of the patients in regards to the treatment process It results in the improvement of the quality and ratings of the healthcare services Improved scores of the patient safety Assists nurses to prioritize their practices together with planning for their shift Bedside report also assist in the decreasing of occurrences of the medication related errors and accidents It assists the nurses to communicate effectively with the physicians concerning the general health care of the patients that are under their care. Bedside report also reduces the period of nurse reporting by minimizing the frequency of patients using their call light.   It is a potential violation of the confidentiality together with the privacy of the patient Not suitable for the hospitals that are having semi private wards and multiple bed units since these conditions are hindrance to the privacy of the patients It is also time consuming because the nurses must spend additional time drafting the report instead of undertaking other important duties. It is only applicable for the hospitals that are blessed with a good number of nurses because at the time of reporting both the outgoing and oncoming nurses must be available. Therefore, a hospital that experiences shortage of nurses might find it challenging implementing it. It increases the cost of patient treatment because the communication materials must be purchased and the hiring of the additional staffs that would be involved in the printing of the reports.
Opportunities Threats
·         The declaration made by the joint commission in the year 2006 supported the use of nursing bedside report as a method of realizing national patient safety goals, boosted its popularity. ·         Since much of the bedside report researches have been made in most of the medical settings such as the medical surgery and the rehabilitation, several of the hospitals have embraced its implementation ·         Availability of the already trained nurses makes the implementation of this strategy not only possible but also economical. ·         The willingness of the hospital administrators where I practice to implement this plan makes it easier to overcome most of the potential challenges that we are likely to experience. ·         The small cost of the implementation of the strategy makes it appealing to our hospital administrators. This is because it only requires staffing team that are already available and a printing machine for the printing of the brochures.   ·         Lack of enough research on the relevancy of the bedside report in settings like emergency departments, labor, intensive care unit, and delivery is a hindrance of its usage in those healthcare settings. ·         The fact that new nurses must undergo a training session makes it slow strategy especially for those who are not quick at learning. ·         It proves expensive especially for the hospitals that experience limitation in regards to printing facilities.

Stakeholders

The stakeholders that are involved in the implementation of this strategy include the following: nurse manager, a duty nurse, patient, and the patient family member. Each one of the parties has a particular role as far as the Implementation of the bedside report is concerned. To begin with, the nurse manager has a role in overseeing the training session of the new nurses regarding the bedside reporting. The nurse manager is also tasked with assigning the duty nurses specific roles and supervising them. During the supervision, the nurse manager ensures that the bedside reporting is done accordingly. The nurse on duty is the actual caregiver to the patient. He or she has the responsibility of drafting the bedside report depending on the patient condition, treatment regime, and the general response of the patient to the administered medication (Copeland, 2012).

The duty nurse is also the one to facilitate the change of shift by briefing the oncoming nurse on the treatment progress of the patient. To achieve all these, the duty nurse must undertake close observation of the patient and if possible perform an oral interview with the aim of getting to know the exact patient condition. On the other hand, the patient is the key player of this strategy. His role is to communicate accurately about his or her wellbeing to the duty nurse. The patient is also the one to identify the family member who should participate in the bedside reporting process. Lastly, the family member mostly performs the role of overseeing the whole process. However, when the patient condition is very critical, the family member undertakes a significant role in making crucial decisions on behalf of the patient (Copeland, 2012).
