Introduction to Theatre

Project #1

Marketing Poster or Webpage 40 points

Choose either 1) or 2) for your project.

1) Design a PUBLICITY/MARKETING poster for an imaginary production of the play OEDIPUS REX by Sophocles.

Include pertinent information

Producing organization (who’s putting it on? NMSU

Theatre Arts, etc.): feel free to make up your own organization

Location (where are performances held?)

Performance days and times

Cost

Where/how to get tickets (at the door? Reservations

and phone number?)

Title of the play (spelled correctly)

Author of the play (spelled correctly)

Choose or design an image that somehow encapsulates your idea of what the play is about (the theme)

You may not use a pre-existing image from another poster for either play. Using another Oedipus poster’s image as your own is a form of plagiarism! You may, however, use clip art, magazine ads, an artist friend, etc. to help you create your image.

Do your poster on Word, PowerPoint, Publisher or another software and import the file into CANVAS under the assignment tab.

Include with your poster a typed 2-paragraph explanation: paragraph one should simply be a one-sentence statement of what is the theme of the play; paragraph two should explain in detail how your image/colors/fonts/etc. exemplify that theme

Or choose this:

1) Design a webpage for an imaginary production of OEDIPUS REX

Create a 1 page website with the following

Background color or image (wallpaper)

Title of the play (spelled correctly)

Author of the play (spelled correctly)

Image (see description in #1)

4 links to external sites that have give the viewer more info on the play

Your name and email address

2) Post your page onto a server (NMSU provides each students web space; or you can post it to free sites like Geocities.com, etc.)

Double check your links are active and that your site has posted

correctly

Send me the web address of your site under the Creative Project

Assignment Tab along with the 2-paragraph explanation: paragraph one

should simply be a one-sentence statement of what is the theme of the

play; paragraph two should explain in detail how your

image/colors/fonts/etc. exemplify that theme

Here is a sample of the written paragraphs that must

accompany the poster or website.

THEME

The theme of the Laramie Project is not to let hate overtake your life.

POSTER ELEMENTS

I chose the ripped up photos to represent both the fragmented lives of the people of Laramie who tell the story and to show the isolation of the community. I choose blue to be my primary colors because to me it represents sadness and grief, as well a coldness which I think was the emotional state of the murderers in the play. I chose the tan/brown to represent the land, which I think ties into how earthy the people of Laramie come across. The font I chose is fairly straightforward, not too fancy. Again, I think this represents Laramie’s people. I made the word “Laramie” bigger than everything else, because ultimately the play is about the people of that community.

Poster includes name and class information.

Theme is simply stated—1 sentence. Theme is what the author is saying about the central idea of the play. In this case, the central idea is “hate.” Theme is a statement about “hate.” The elements are clearly addressed: colors, fonts, sizes, etc.

DO NOT INCLUDE PLOT, WHY YOU LIKED THE PLAY, ETC.

Explain why you made the choices you did and how they tie into either the plot or the theme.

Project #2

Set Design 40 points

You may choose either Oedipus RexHamlet, A Doll’s House or Fences. All designs should be historically appropriate for the years in which the plays were written. All sketches must be your own: any coming from pre-existing sets or costume designs posted online, etc. will be considered plagiarism! Also, you may not trace or copy any design—freehand designs only. You may, however, use the sample body forms as the basis of your design.

Your grade is based on insight and historical accuracy rather than artistry and sketching ability.

1) Design a set rendering (picture) of one scene from the play

Sketch, paint, or draw your rendering

Include all furniture, doors, windows, etc. that are necessary for the action to happen

Research for historical accuracy: furniture, doors, windows, etc. must be appropriate to the time period. Use the internet and the Library for resources.

Include with your rendering a typed 2-paragraph explanation: paragraph one should simply be a one-sentence statement of what is the theme of the play; paragraph two should explain in detail how your designs exemplify that theme

Project #3

2) Design costumes for 1 male and 1 female character from a scene in the play

Sketch, design, or draw 1 male and 1 female character from any scene

in either play

Include all hair, shoes, accessories, etc.

Research for historical accuracy: all items must be appropriate to the time period

Rendering should be 8 1/2 x11″ and must be in color (no black and white or pencil sketches, although you may paint your sketches)

Include with your design a typed 2-paragraph explanation: paragraph one should simply be a one-sentence statement of what is the theme of the play; paragraph two should explain in detail how designs exemplify that theme

Project #5

Acting Monologue 40 points

Write a one to five minute monologue about your own life. A monologue is a scene from a Play in which only one actor speaks. Hamlet’s famous “To Be or Not To Be” speech is a monologue. It is one actor speaking, rather than a dialogue that is two or more actors speaking. Basically, you will write a one to five minute play that is about you and your life – tell me a story about you. It can be in the first person, can be the truth or a lie, but make it interesting and lively.

Once it is written, video yourself presenting it for an audience – me! You can post it to YOUTUBE and then send me the link or since most of you are much more tech savvy than I am, send the video to me in CANVAS some other way.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE:

I am always late. For everything. I try to be on time. I never intend to be late. I start off for almost everything on time, maybe even early, but something always seems to get in the way. Take what happened recently for example: It was a regular Tuesday morning. I had to teach a class at 10:20. In order to be prepared and in the right frame of mind to teach, I needed to leave home by 8:30. Sometime during the night the electricity went off, when I woke, there was the flashing red light of my clock, saying 4:20. I panicked.

Was it 4:20 AM or PM? Had I slept through the day? The sun was up. My four cats

were in their usual places waiting for their breakfast, so it couldn’t be too late. If they weren’t fed by 7:00am, there was always a chance they could swarm and eat me for breakfast, but that hadn’t happened, so I was still OK. I jumped up and grabbed my phone. It was 7:00. Only 30 minutes late. I woke the rest of the family and started the usual morning drill. Things went well until . . . the dog got out. The wind had blown the back gate open and he decided to take an early morning walkabout. There I was, in my PJ’s in the middle of the street yelling “Vincent, get back here!” (Who names a dog “Vincent” anyway?) Vincent decided he needed some more time out, so he proceeded to bounce across the busy street we live on a couple of times, missing getting hit by inches and giving me a heart attack. Eventually he decided he was finished and came back in.

By now my 30 minutes of lost time had turned into 45 and I was really late. I got the rest of the family fed and out the door then took a quick shower and put on my best “teaching costume” (give me a break – I teach acting) and started to leave. Oh wait, forgot my phone, oh wait, forgot my teaching file, oh wait, can’t leave without the second cup of coffee. I couldn’t find the travel mug, so I just put it in a cup. It happened to be my husband’s favorite, but I wouldn’t loose it, right? I was finally ready and with my hands full, I headed out the back door and down the steps. There are only three steps. I have been down them a million times. This one time though, I missed one and started to fall.

It was like a great slow motion movie. I could feel myself falling and in my head I was thinking…don’t break the coffee cup…don’t break it! So, instead of tossing the cup and using both hands to break the fall, I saved the cup but broke my shoulder. That’s right, two breaks in the joint and a rotator cuff tear. Gotta love it. I was late to say the least, about 3 class periods late. But it wasn’t my fault. I blame it on the Electric Company!
