Purpose: The overall purpose of the KM design report is to decide with regards to which solution can overcome the problems identified in the KM analysis report. Decide what type of solution you would like to propose as the new ‘to-be’ solution, which knowledge management system (KMS) to implement in your organisation, that can solve the issues identified in the ‘as-is’ knowledge management situation in your organisation.

This part of the report allows the team to work creatively incorporate your creativity and identify how the problem(s) that you have identified in your analysis report can be solved through a new Knowledge Management System (KMS). Your report should be divided into four main sections:

‘Executive summary’ of the report

Introduction (max 150 words)

Body which states the recommendations you make as a team

Conclusion section.

1. Executive summary

The executive summary provides a summary of the report and its findings. This section should never go beyond one page.

2. Introduction

The introduction should ‘remind’ the reader of the issues identified in the analysis report. Provide a summary of the issues identified in the analysis report in no more than 150 words.

3. The body of the report

Focus on the KM framework elements of the analysis report; i.e. people, content, IT and processes; and identify how these elements need to be changed or altered to overcome the problems identified in your first report.

Note: You may not have to change each of the framework elements but might only have to alter one of the elements to achieve your final goal. For example, if there is already a strategy in place, you may not wish to introduce a KM strategy as a solution.

Remember, the final design report shows you and the lecturer team your thinking has been shaped by the topics and themes of the subject, and how the different topics fit together. Make sure to show this and provide a detailed description of the solution you propose for the to-be KMS.

Finally, remember it is important you use headings and any suitable presentation scheme to capture your audience.

4. Conclusion

Provide a concise conclusion that makes it clear, what your recommendation for your organisation is.

5. Bibliography

Consider:

Presentation and layout of your report;

Quality of recommendation – Quality of recommendation is the most important and should highlight reasons for choices made by pinning them back to literature, following logical reasoning in terms of recommendations.
